A truly exceptional piece of Chanel history, these bold earrings elevate a whimsical design into a work of art. From Chanel’s 1993 Spring collection, the birdcage motif was inspired by the 1991-92 Coco L’Esprit de Chanel ad starring Vanessa Paradis.

The birdcage design holds historical significance for Chanel. Coco Chanel once famously declared, “People have always wanted to put me in cages: cages with cushions stuffed with promises, gilded cages, cages that I’ve touched looking away from. I never wanted any other than the one I would build myself.” One of Coco’s most prized possessions was a gifted miniature jewelry birdcage housing two lovebirds, which she kept on a coffee table at her Parisian apartment.
The 1993 birdcage earrings were designed by Victoire de Castellane under Karl Lagerfeld’s creative direction. Harnessing de Castellane’s bold and energetic aesthetic, these earrings were among the designs that elevated her to lead Chanel’s costume jewelry division.

The birdcage has subsequently served as a hallmark through the years at Chanel.
Most recently, the House paid homage to the birdcage’s legacy as the centerpiece of the Spring 2025 runway collection:
Crafted of 24k gold plating, the vintage earrings feature dangling CC logos as an homage to the lovebirds Coco Chanel kept in her personal birdcage. These charming earrings are in excellent condition, with minor hairlines scratches from normal wear. As with many CHANEL earrings, the clip-on functionality and oversized design may require adjusting to. They are lighter than they appear, but are still a substantial earrings.
