Review:
Founded by visionary designer Manfred Thierry Mugler, the house of Mugler is famed for its futuristic designs and avant-garde silhouettes. Mugler launched his brand during the 1970s, and helped create a powerful and sexy “superwoman” aesthetic, drawing inspiration from architecture and his dance background. His extravagant visions were only matched by his supreme craftsmanship. Though the house was rebranded in 2010 under Nicola Formichetti, Mugler’s legacy remains strong with contemporary pieces blending much of the archival DNA developed by Mugler himself.

This Mugler cutout trench incorporates several of the brand’s foundational elements, including strong tailoring, exaggerated shoulders, and a cinched waist. The cutout waist allows for a peak at layers worn under the trench, a wink at the brand’s iconic provocative designs. The trench features cupro, also known as vegan silk, a luxurious plant-based fabric made from cotton waste. This fabrication allows for an excellent drape and fluid movement while still supporting a structured silhouette. The vented back also features two cutouts that almost create a cape-like effect, another nod to Mugler’s superhero-inspired designs.
The trench is both sculptural and feminine and is a statement all on its own. Indeed, the outfit is the coat.
