Bottega Veneta’s Intrecciato Banana Hobo bag is an underrated gem from former Creative Director, Daniel Lee. Released during the brand’s pre-Fall 2020 collection, this work of art combines the ease and slouchiness of a hobo bag with the chic sophistication of Bottega’s signature intrecciato weaving.
The “intrecciato” (Italian for “woven” or “braided”) is a handcrafted technique that leverages an intricate process of braiding flat strips of leather, often into a slanted grid pattern. Specialist artisans weave calfskin leather into a languid, banana-like silhouette. With a decently wide and adjustable shoulder strap, the curved hobo hugs the body with an ease that betrays its intricacies.
Part of Bottega’s distinctive series of “Foulard” bags, this line of accessories is meant to mimic “wearing a bandana on your shoulder.” Their unique, draped shape offer an “if you know, you know” moment to keen-eyed fashion enthusiasts. Though the outside exhibits complicated craftsmanship, the inside of the Banana bag offers a streamlined single large compartment, unlined interior with a zip closure, and a gold-finished hardware featuring the brand’s signature triangle logo.
